Why This Matters
Since Hurricane Helene, Baptists on Mission has been serving Western North Carolina by rebuilding and repairing homes. Every volunteer who swings a hammer or clears debris begins their day with a meal prepared by this kitchen.
When you serve here, you are not “helping in a kitchen.”
You are fueling the rebuilding of our community.
If the meals stop, the work slows. Your role directly impacts how many homes get restored.
What You’ll Do (Shadow Shift – Training Focus)
This is a learning shift designed to onboard consistent volunteers into the rhythm of the kitchen. You will:
-
Shadow the Kitchen Manager and experienced volunteers
-
Assist in preparing breakfast
-
Help assemble sandwiches for volunteer lunches
-
Set out and serve meals
-
Support kitchen cleanup and reset
You will not be left alone to figure it out. This is structured learning with hands-on responsibility.
Who This Is For
We are looking for dependable YMCA members with basic cooking confidence — not professional chefs, but individuals comfortable preparing food without constant supervision.
This is best suited for someone who:
-
Wants to commit consistently
-
Takes ownership
-
Understands that small details (timing, prep, cleanliness) matter
Spots are limited to build a reliable team.
If you want to directly strengthen the people rebuilding Swannanoa — this is where you start.
