Volunteer: Free Community Market - Grocery Pickup - Food Lion/Dollar General

Do you enjoy driving and want to make a direct impact in your community? Montmorenci UMC’s Free Community Market relies on volunteers to pick up donated groceries from local stores and deliver them to the church so that every guest can have essential food items in their homes.

This is an important recurring role, and a training session is required to prepare you for routes, pickup procedures, and coordination with store partners. Volunteers will load and transport grocery items, so a larger vehicle (pickup truck, SUV, or van) is necessary.

Pick ups would be at the following locations: 

Food Lion: 35 Westridge Market Pl, Candler, NC 28715
Dollar General: 210 TF Kirkpatrick Way, Candler, NC 28715

The Free Community Market is a partnership between MANNA Foodbank and Montmorenci UMC and works to support anyone in the community who is experiencing food insecurity. Each week we serve between 130 and 170 households, distributing 7000+ lbs of food.  approximately 40 % of this is Fresh Produce.  Meat, bakery and bread, dry goods, and personal care items are also available,

For each market that occurs every Wednesday, there is an AM shift to help prepare for the market and a PM shift to help distribute food.

Volunteers are able to work both shifts if available. 


AM Shift: Food Sorting/Packaging: 8:30am-11:30am

PM Shift: Food Distribution: 11:30am-2:30pm (clients are served between 12:00-2:00)

Volunteer Responsibilities:    

AM Shift:

Assistance with on-site setupUnloading Food TrucksIntake, Parking, Client CareThere are available training opportunities to assist with grocery / food pickup.Unloading food truck and/or packaging boxes/bags

PM Shift:

Passing out food boxes/bags to community residents Assistance with breakdown and clean upLeftover transport to ABCCM or other local food pantries (optional)Return crates to local Food Lion or Sand Hill Community Garden (optional)
